Jacob loved Rachel

How are you all? It’s one week after Valentine’s day! 🙂

I wanted to share a love story from the bible that I really stand speechless every time I read:

Now Jacob loved Rachel; so he said, “I will serve you seven years for Rachel your younger daughter” …  So Jacob served seven years for Rachel, and they seemed only a few days to him because of the love he had for her … Now it came to pass in the evening, that he took Leah his daughter and brought her to Jacob … So it came to pass in the morning, that behold, it was Leah. And he said to Laban, “…Was it not for Rachel that I served you? … And Laban said, “… Fulfill her week, and we will give you this one also for the service which you will serve with me still another seven years.” Then Jacob did so and fulfilled her week. So he gave him his daughter Rachel as wife also. (Genesis 29:18-29).

I think the message behind this passage is not love, it was to show Jacob that deceiving others is not the way of life. Just like he deceived his father to get his blessings, he was deceived by his father-in-law. BUT, God’s words are never limited to one meaning!

Some thoughts that come to my mind are …

1. What kind of love is this? This type of love I see in the passage is the REAL love we’ve all been hearing about! It’s the love that gives and doesn’t wait for return! Love that would go the second mile for the loved one!
2. Jacob saw a very demanding father-in-law, who only wanted to use him, but still his love to Rachel surpassed all this.
3. One once said, “Love doesn’t ask for anything, it only gives; it doesn’t look for someone suitable for you, it looks for someone you are suitable for.”

If this is what love would do, do I really love?

Can I say that I love God? (“For him?” is in bold so that you make sure of intentions)

• Am I willing to go out of my way, for Him?
• Am I willing to be deceived (and know it), and not do anything about it, for Him? (Just like Jacob)
• Am I willing to do some extra work, for Him?
• Am I willing to feel all what I do as nothing, for Him? “they seemed only a few days to him because of the love he had for her”

how about more practical examples,

• Am I willing to wake up half an hour early for quiet time?
• Am I willing to wake up 1 hour early, once a week, to church from the start?

Can I say that I love my friends?
Well, then I guess I can’t say that I love my enemies!!!

The first verse says it all, “Jacob loved Rachel”, this the only reason for all what he did!
